You can be as involved as you want, as hosts make traditional foods like sikil p’ak, a hummus-like dish made from ground squash seeds, and more modern creations, like tomato habanero marmalade, based on ancient recipes. Mayan culture is still alive and well in small villages like Nuevo Durango, about a 90-minute drive from Cancun, offering a personal and hands-on look at Mayan traditions through storytelling and participation. The Mayan civilization first populated the Yucatan Peninsula about 4,000 years ago. If you can catch them, take them to Casa Mission, a hacienda-style restaurant in Cozumel, where, if you call or WhatsApp the restaurant ahead of time, you can order lionfish ceviche and the chef will prepare it tableside. You can also charter a boat and go fishing-not just for game fish, but for a species called lionfish. One essential hint: Take off your jewelry and watches-the monkeys are excellent thieves. Under animal caretaker supervision, you can get up close and personal with the animals. If you want a beach experience without the crowds, head 60 miles south down the coast from Cancun to the tiny beachfront community of Akumal (Mayan for “place of the turtle”). It can be tough to tear yourself away, but there is even more to explore and a chance to experience another side of Cancun.
